The year 2018 is not finished yet, but allow me to give you the highlights of my career as a Civil Engineer, who works in an engineering consultancy firm as Principal Structural Technician. Christmas is fast approaching and we will all be going to be busy for sure. I may not have time to write something in the coming days.
Next week, Monday, 10th of December, I’ll be visiting the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Headquarters at One Great George Street, Westminster, London, SW1P 3AA to attend the Certificate Presentation Ceremony. I will qualify as a Technician Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
When I was a kid, I admired those people in construction who can build different types of structures such as houses, buildings, bridges to name a few. These people inspired me to pursue a career in Civil Engineering. Being good at math is a plus. I remember being honoured by my high school professor after achieving a final grade of 92% in Physics. I made a history in my Physics professor teaching career! I was the very first student amongst all students my professor handled who achieved this mark. All I can say to school students who are considering a career in civil engineering is that you have a huge choice of sectors to work within, from structural engineering, bridges, geotechnical, roads, transportation, environmental, energy and power, dams, and so much more! There is a wide range of opportunities in the civil engineering world and the possibilities are nearly limitless. It is also an incredibly rewarding career as you get to see first hand how your work affects the lives of others. Whatever project you help create will forever be attached to your name and that is something that you can be proud of.
My career highlights this year are:
- Being able to be part of BILT Community as a speaker (BILT ASIA 2018, BILT ANZ 2018 and BILT EUR 2018). BILT stands for “Bringing Industry Leadership Together” previously known as RTC or Revit Technological Conference
- Become a member of the longest Civil Engineering institution in the world, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) after passing my Technician Professional Review in March 2018.
- And the last but not the least is attending the Certificate Presentation Ceremony at the ICE Headquarters.
For those of you who are looking at becoming a member of the institution, don’t put it off. There are lot’s of support you can get, from getting in touch with your institution’s regional representative, watch recorded webinars in YouTube or perhaps, if you know of someone who in the same membership grade to that one you are interested with, talk to them and ask for some support or guidance. I am sure, they will be willing to provide you with a help. The workshops that were conducted by the ICE were the only help I’ve got in preparing myself on how to complete the application form and to check whether my ideas suits well to meet the competencies required. I highly encourage you to make some time to attend those workshops.
Communication is the key. Achieving EngTech is a great benefit to yourself and the company you are working with. Some company provides cash incentives if you become a member of any professional institution.
