How to add your Power BI Dashboard to your BIM 360 Project Home Dashboard

Hello there, Allan Cantos here. I hope you are all well.

As a pre-requisite to this tutorial, I assumed you already have built your Power BI Dashboard that you would like to link to your BIM 360 Project Home Dashboard. If not yet, I would advise you to build one first then come back to this tutorial.

Alright, let’s get started.

Here is what we are trying to achieve:

Before you can do modifications to the “Project Home” page, you must have as admin rights.

You can access the “Project Admin” page by clicking the “9-dots” located at the upper left-hand corner (just below the Autodesk BIM 360 logo).

And, once again, before you can modify the “Project Home” page, you must have a “Project Admin” rights.

Now, go back to the “Project Home” page and click the “Customize” setting icon that you’ll find at the upper right-hand side of your dashboard.

An now you are ready to add a new visualisation card. Click on Card Library.

And from the “Card Library”, scroll down until you find the “Power BI”.

Select it and then click “Add Card”.

Click “Configure”

Next, log in to your Power BI account on your Chrome browser and open the Power BI report.

After that, select “File” and from the drop-down list, select “Publish to web”.

And this will give you the “Embed code”. Select the link highlighted in yellow below and hit CTRL-C to copy.

Go back to your BIM 360

Give your Power BI “Card Title” a name then paste (CTRL-V) the link copied from the previous step to “Partner URL”. Make sure to delete the texts before https and the texts about frame border at the end of the pasted URL.

Click the “Save” button and you’ll now be able to see your Power BI dashboard from you BIM 360 Project Home page.

Power BI Tricks

Hello there, Allan Cantos here. Apologies if I’ve been so quiet last month as lots of things happened in my personal life, however, nothing to worry, all were good ones.

Today, I’d like to share to you a trick or perhaps it’s not a trick but rather a remedy if you happen to encounter the same issue I encountered while working with Power BI.

I was working in Power BI Desktop finalizing my dashboard before publishing it and when I am ready to publish it, to my surprise, the “Multi-row card Title” filter that I applied didn’t show up in the published version.

Did you notice the difference between the two versions in the yellow-green background cards?

I did some test and found a solution and I am more than happy to share this with you. We all learn from each other anyway. If you happen to have other solutions to the problem I encountered, please do share it by adding your comments below.

Ok, here’s what I did. First I turn-off the “Title” filter of my Multi-row card.

Next, I published my dashboard and replace the dataset.

After that, I went back to my Power BI desktop and turn-back-on the
“Title” filter of my Multi-row card. Publish again and replace the dataset and your published version will now be the same as the one you have in Power BI Desktop.

Next time, I’m going to teach you how to duplicate your page and use your next data for the next stage without breaking the link to the selection filter.

“Photobucket” is not allowing 3rd party hosting on free accounts

Today I’ll talk about 3rd party image hosting. When I started building my Power BI dashboard, it looks cool to have images attached. The 3rd party image hosting website I’m talking about is “Photobucket”.

My Power BI dashboard really works well-having images on it that links interactively with your data until one time I received an email from “Photobucket” informing me that “third party hosting isn’t allowed” anymore on free accounts, you must pay $400 annual subscription in order for your image URL links to work. I just realized the effect of this when I opened my Power BI file to update the information on my dashboard.

Here is my previous Power BI dashboard I built last month.

Here it is now after 3rd party hosting is removed.

As you can see from the above image, my image URL link is now broken. To make it work, I need to find a place to store my images wherein it can provide me with a URL link. What I’ll do sometime next week is to remove all my images on Photobucket and since I do not have any intention to pay $400 annual subscription fee, I will also close my account.

As a replacement to “Photobucket”, I found a site called “ImgZeit”. Here is the welcome page when you visit the website  https://imgzeit.com/

I hope ImgZeit will give me free subscription by mentioning their site in this article, finger crossed (“,).

I only have 40 images stored on “Photobucket” as of this moment and therefore it does not cost me much of a headache. I imagine how infuriated those who have been using this website to store their images for their blogs that have been running for 2 years, 3 years or some maybe even more than 5 years.

I’m not in a rush to look for a free website to host my images. Anyone is free to recommend one if you know of any by leaving your comment below. Your feedback is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
